Break-ups and breakdowns

Daily Stats:
Words: la-la-la
Caffeine: morning cup so far
Evil Calories: 4000 cloves of roasted garlic with dinner last night. I smell like feet.
Reality TV: suspended due to NaNoWriMo

Oh, NaNoWriMo. We had such a good run, didn't we? Stealing time in the wee hours of the morning, slipping away in the afternoons while the boy watched far too much Noggin. But I fear that it is not meant to be this year. It's not you, it's me. I just have a lot on my plate right now, and need to be with a novel writing incentive that doesn't move at shotgun, break-neck speed. I hope you understand. NaNoWriMo, don't go away mad. Just go away.

*insert bad 80's song from butt-rock group whose name I can't recall*

Yep. NaNo go poof. Don't worry, I'm not totally throwing in the towel, but I have officially snubbed the 50K word goal. There's just no way. Not with parental units in house and road trip to Wisconsin next week for the holiday. My new goal is to finish by the end of December.

Speaking of road trip...

Let me paint a little picture for ya. Take my dad, who cannot go a nanosecond with making some kind of noise - clearing his throat, blowing his nose, humming, making weird "choo-choo-choo" sounds for no obvious reason. Add my mom, who must read every sign she sees ("oh, men at work", "bump ahead", "road may be icy, hmmm"). Then throw in my almost three year old, who can (and will) recite lines from Go, Diego, Go! for HOURS on end. Add in my husband and I crammed in the back seat with him, husband trying to give himself a lobotomy with a coke can and the corner of a Cheese-Its box, and me, sneaking some left over Valium from when my neck was all wonky and slipping back into my "happy place", where I spent most of my childhood.

Ahhhh...memories in the making.

You must write about this because now I want to know more! It's delicious.

(sorry typo on first try, had to delete)

At some point, don't you start to come full-circle, and get into it? I'm not sure what I mean, but if I were in that situation, my mind would snap rather quickly, and then I'd start enjoying it, and instigating ways to make it all worse. I'd fake the hiccups, or sing falsetto Metallica or something. Maybe that's just me.

I snorted out loud at your mom reading the signs. I spent a road trip with someone who did that and I seriously considered killing her and burying her body behind a 7-11.

Pfft- the 50k is just a target. The whole point is to be writing. go you.

Pi** on NaNo. I abandoned mine. Started a new project, and like Eileen said, the point is to be writing.

I just don't think I can write without editing along the way . . . no way to make 50K in a month that way, what with the goats and children and all.

I wish you much luck on the road trip. You are a far braver woman than I!

The best part about this trip is that you ate all that garlic. You did it on purpose, didn't you? ;)

Enjoy the trip as much as humanly possible.

BWAHAHAHAAA!!! Oh, that's too funny because I know it so well.

You are the better daughter than I. Not only did you provide a grandchild, but you are road tripping.

Elizabeth - don't worry, you will most certainly be hearing about the adventure (as long as they loosen the straps of my straight jacket enough so I can type!)

BPV - Yes, at some point you just have to throw in the towel and join in with the annoyingness. Instead of odd sounds, I start spouting all my die hard liberal views, which usually makes my dad's head explode. Messy, yes, but then it's quiet!

Eileen - yeah, what is with reading the signs? And she reads EVERYTHING, not just road sign. Restaurant signs, gas station signs, strip club signs (there's one along I-94 on the way to Kalamazoo) "nude live girls, triple x, hmmm..."

Elise - I know what you mean...I can tranquilize my internal editor, but I can't knock her out completely. I figure 30k WITH editing along the way is just as good as 50k without, right?

Carrie - Let us never speak of the "garlic incident" again...

Ms. Ellis - laugh it up, missy. You get 'em for Christmas. Make sure you're at the breakfast table when dad eats his Grape Nuts. It's truly an experience.

Sorry about you and NaNo, but you're writing a real manuscript, so I wouldn't be screamin' my way through it either for some random deadline.

I actually loved your description of the road trip. Definitely fodder for the keyboard. Can't wait to hear more!
